Perspective – you can’t have it if your head is down

May 26th, 2011

Perspective.

It’s what we miss when our head is down.

…when we’re so focused on our Blackberry or IPhone that nothing else matters.

…when we’re so focused on our next step that we don’t see an easier path ahead.

It’s amazing what can happen to our perspective if we lift up our head and look.  Simply.  Look.

Enjoy this laugh out loud video of people lacking perspective.  You know you’ve been there!

How mountains & cantaloupes go together when it comes to the high view

May 24th, 2011

After laughing out loud at this one, and firmly pushing back memories of ugh-inducing highschool algebra classes that threatened to emerge, the cartoon made me think of the lessons that cantaloupes a.k.a. Mountain Life Lensesâ„¢ have to teach us.

On a bad day Carrot Life Lensesâ„¢ (Mountain’s polar opposite) can have their head buried in the sand.  Carrots can be uber-focused on details that are neither important or strategic.  Like not noticing that having 60 cantaloupes is a little odd.

It’s mountains who are likely to say ‘hang on a minute, what’s going on here?!’

Because they can see far ahead, Mountain Life Lensesâ„¢ can more easily see the big picture and notice when something is amiss.

Before Mountains get too cocky though, know that every Life Lens™ has its good and bad days.  Mountains, on a bad day, can have their heads in the clouds and conversely, not notice the details.

C’est la vie.

Yin Yang.

Push or pull – stubborn, damn doors

May 19th, 2011

Our own perspectives – how we see the world – seem natural, normal and RIGHT, especially when we are under stress.  When in conflict we tend to do more of what ISN’T working.  Like saying the same thing over and over and over.

How many times do we bang our heads against the door trying to get people to see things our way, when we’re stubbornly resistant to seeing things others’ way?

You can try pushing but maybe try pulling from time to time.

Note: I originally saw this photo in a presentation by the wonderful Brene Brown.

How to walk in another’s shoes or rather horseshoes

May 17th, 2011

Life Lensesâ„¢ is all about recognizing the blinders we wear. The filters that affect our perception, our ability to communicate and relate.

It’s hard enough to relate to that annoying co-worker who doesn’t see things ‘your’ way or your boss who acts like she’s speaking Latin or your kid, who despite your best efforts, seems like he’s from Jupiter.

Those are human examples.

How hard would it be to take off your blinders and act like a horse. Really act like a horse. It would take an amazing ability to relate to the perspective of a horse.

Could you do it?

Check out these folks who did. You won’t believe your eyes.

This video came to me via my good friend and colleague, the incomparable Dolly Hopkins.
